Unsubscribe from Amazon emails

Amazon sends several kinds of email, and each has its own setting. Its help page on subscription email points deals, product recommendations and new releases to one place: the Communication Preferences Center.

How to unsubscribe

  1. Use the Communication Preferences Center

Amazon’s help page lists the Communication Preferences Center for deals, product recommendations, new releases and more. Review your current preferences there and switch off what you no longer want.

  2. Change Prime, Subscribe & Save and Amazon Delivers separately

The same help page lists separate links for your Prime membership, your Subscribe & Save items and Amazon Delivers email subscriptions. Check each one you receive email from.

  3. Give it a few days

According to Amazon, new preferences can take 1 to 5 business days to take effect, so an email that was already scheduled may still arrive.

Unsubscribing does not work? Object

If the emails keep coming, or the link does not work, you have a stronger tool. If you live in the EU or the UK, Article 21 GDPR lets you object to the use of your data for direct marketing at any time, without giving a reason. After that, Amazon may no longer use your data for it, and must respond without undue delay and within one month at most. In the US, the CAN-SPAM Act requires senders to honor an opt-out within 10 business days.

Send your objection through the Amazon Privacy Notice. The Amazon Privacy Notice describes how to contact Amazon about your personal information.

Example text

Objection to direct marketing (Article 21 GDPR) Dear Amazon, Under Article 21(2) GDPR, I object to the use of my personal data for direct marketing, including newsletters and promotional email. This concerns the email address I am sending this message from. Please stop using this address for marketing and confirm that you have done so. Kind regards,

What keeps coming

Order confirmations, shipping updates, receipts and password emails are not marketing. They keep coming after you unsubscribe, and that is how it should be.

Scan my inbox for free →

Amazon is rarely the only sender in your inbox. in-boxed scans your inbox for free and shows every sender of promotional email, each with its route to get off the list. For a one-time €4.99 it sends the unsubscribe requests for every sender you pick. The scan reads only email headers, runs in your own browser and stores nothing.

Frequently asked questions

Will I still get order emails from Amazon?

Yes. Order confirmations, shipping updates and receipts are not marketing and keep coming. The preferences above stop deals, recommendations and similar email.

I unsubscribed but Amazon still emails me. Why?

Amazon says changes can take 1 to 5 business days. Also check whether the email comes from Prime, Subscribe & Save or Amazon Delivers, which each have their own setting.

How long until the emails stop?

An email that was already scheduled can still arrive. Under GDPR a company must act on an objection without undue delay and within one month at most; under CAN-SPAM in the US, within 10 business days. If marketing keeps coming after that, you can complain to your data protection authority.
