How to stop Black Friday emails before they start

Black Friday is Friday 27 November 2026, and Cyber Monday is 30 November. Unsubscribing can take up to 10 business days to work. So if you want a quiet inbox that week, the moment to act is mid-November, not the morning the deals land.

Why timing matters

An unsubscribe is not instant. In the US, the CAN-SPAM Act gives senders up to 10 business days to honor an opt-out. In the EU and UK, GDPR requires a company to act on an objection to direct marketing without undue delay and within one month at most.

Shops plan their Black Friday campaigns weeks ahead. Unsubscribe on the day itself and the emails that were already scheduled will still arrive. Unsubscribe by around 13 November, ten business days before Black Friday, and the senders have had the full legal window to take you off the list.

Step 1: decide what to keep

Not every shop email is noise. If there is a store you actually buy from on Black Friday, keep it. The goal is not an empty inbox, it is an inbox where the emails that matter are easy to find.

Order confirmations, shipping updates and receipts are not marketing, so they keep coming whatever you unsubscribe from.

Step 2: unsubscribe from the rest

You can do it by hand: open an email from each shop, scroll to the bottom and click unsubscribe. Gmail and Outlook also show an unsubscribe button next to the sender for many marketing emails. That works, one sender at a time.

If you have dozens of shops in your inbox, in-boxed does it in one go. It scans your inbox for free and lists every sender of promotional email. For a one-time €4.99 it sends the unsubscribe requests for every sender you pick. The scan reads only email headers, runs in your own browser and stores nothing.

Step 3: check the stubborn ones

Some senders keep mailing after an unsubscribe. In the EU and UK you can then send a formal objection under Article 21 GDPR, which a company must respect. Our brand-by-brand guides show where to send it for shops like Amazon, Temu and SHEIN.
